授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
Using established theoretical frameworks, this course investigates national cultural values and how those values manifest themselves in everyday interaction. The course has two aims:
(i) To consider national identity and how it affects intercultural communication.
(ii) To develop students' English fluency - especially presentation,  discussion and writing skills.

/Course Goals
By the end of the course students should be able to understand some cultural theories and have developed their speaking and listening skills in English. This will be achieved through:
- Weekly discussions on theoretical and practical aspects of comparative culture
- Regular reading assignments to prepare for class.
- Three writing assignments to examine theoretical and practical aspects of comparative culture to develop English academic writing skills.
- Group research project into one social aspect of a country. Each group gives a class presentation on its research and writes a report to be handed in at the end of the course.

/Course contents
Lesson Format
30-40 mins: Teacher introduces an aspect of culture (theoretical and empirical)
50-60 mins: Students present the same aspect of culture about their country to each other.

Week 1 Orientation What is culture? Cultural Theories
Week 2 Individual Identity
Week 3 National Identity – Hofstede's value system; Introduce your country
Week 4 Homogeneity vs. heterogeneity; Nations and National Groups
Week 5 Power Distance (Social Identity); Political/ government systems
Week 6 Individualism v Collectivism; Freedom of speech, group loyalty
Week 7 Individualism v Collectivism; Health systems, Food, Drink,
Week 8 Masculinity – Competition v quality of life; Education systems.
Week 9 Masculinity – Gender & Culture; Gender, Culture & Work
Week 10 Long-term orientation; Religion
Week 11 Uncertainty Avoidance; Marriage & family structure
Week 12 Indulgence; Work & leisure patterns.
Week 13 Aesthetics - Ways of Seeing; Art & Music
Week 14 High v Low context; Multiculturalism, immigration, citizenship
Week 15 Language and Culture; Intercultural communication.
事前学修・事後学修
/Preparation and review class
* Three writing assignments during the semester. (800 words)
* Preparation for group presentation.
* Presentation report.

Weekly handouts and lecture materials drawn from online and textual sources will be uploaded and available for students on the class Moodle site.

* 3 Written Assignments:  50%
* Presentations and presentation reports:  50%
成績評価の基準
/Grading Criteria
Written assignments are graded as follows:
* How well the essay answers the essay topic
* English fluency and accuracy
* Persuasiveness of the argument
* How well the essay conforms to academic writing conventions.

Presentations are graded as follows:
* Successful completion of research task.
* English fluency & accuracy
* Organisation of the content (how coherent and coherence)
* Presentation skills - persuasiveness and use of visual aids.

/Remarks
The medium of instruction of this course is English - there are  Japanese versions of some of the written materials, but all class discussions and written work are in English. Please feel free to contact the instructor if you would like to take the course, but you are concerned about your English language abilities
