授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
  The aim of this course is to improve students’ speaking, listening, and composing
skills in English to develop their confidence and ability in conducting day-to-day conversation, discussing various topics of interest, and writing and presenting summary reports.  Points of emphasis include interactional skills, active listening, stress and intonation, connected speech, and pronunciation problems particular to Japanese.  Students will participate in and develop skill in short opinion exchanges and discussions on familiar topics.
     Lessons will follow a set pattern of warm up talks and discussions on the unit topic, pre-reading and reading tasks, followed by comprehension checks. Output tasks follow a planning, discussion, practice, report cycle. Extension activities based on a listening passage will be followed by consolidation tasks including a brief speech and self-evaluation.  Tasks are done in small groups or pairs.

Details will be explained in the first class.

/Course Goals
・Students will develop fluency in the use of basic conversation questions and sentence patterns to talk about themselves and get information from others in everyday situations.
・Students will identify individual pronunciation problems and show improvement in approximating the sounds and making sound changes in connected speech.
・Students will expand their vocabulary to enrich the content of their  discussions and reports.
・Students will develop listening and speaking skills in order to actively participate in and lead a discussion.
・Students will develop skills in summarizing main points of a short reading passage.  
・Students will gain skill in reporting discussion results to the group.
授業内容
/Course contents
Week 1~2: Course introduction: textbook introduction.  Exchange simple personal information. Short intro speech.
Week 2: Describe and introduce friends and family.  Short speech on friends and memories.
Week 3: Abilities and life skills.  Short talk on learning something new.
Week 4: Review Units 1-3. Schedules and times.  Present a day in your life as an imaginary person.
Week 5: Story telling.  Recalling an experience. Prepare and tell and memorable experience.
Week 6: Describing and comparing things. Short speech on favorite things or best ways to study English.
Week 7: Review Units 4-6. Talking about food preparation. Explain food of a specific country or favorite menu.
Week 8: Describing people's appearances. Short talk on style or a family member.
Week 9: Spending free time. Short talk on a pastime or hobby.
Week 10: Review Units 7-9. Suggesting things to do or see. Present a brief tour.
Week 11: Describing jobs and dreams.  Talk about future job.
Week 12: Talking about plans and the future. Present a prediction of a future lifestyle
Week 13: Review Units 10-12. Course review and consolidation.  Assign final group presentations.
Week 14: Decide groups and topics for presentations. Planning.
Week 15: Final presentation preparation in groups. Check plan.  Prepare visuals.
事前学修・事後学修
/Preparation and review class
Students are required to prepare and review each lesson and keep a notebook of useful vocabulary and expressions.  Students will complete the Main Task Reading and Comprehension Check for each unit as a homework assignment.
Preparation and homework will take about 90 minutes per week.

成績評価の方法
/Grading
30% of the evaluation will be based on class participation/attendance; 30% by quizzes and recorded weekly short talk assignments;  40% by the final group oral presentation.
成績評価の基準
/Grading Criteria
Students must complete all assignments and tasks ON TIME to pass the course.  Late work will not be accepted. Group cooperation is essential and will strongly affect the quality of the final group presentations.  5 percentage points will be deducted from the class participation score for each absence.
