授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course is an English communication class. The focus will be on interpersonal communication. This involves 4 kinds of information exchange: 1. Successfully exchanging detailed information such as time, dates, scheduling information, and email addresses. 2. Exchanging personal information such as likes and dislikes, interests, family information, and personal history. 3. Exchanging ideas about abstract topics such as global warming, education, 4. Developing communication strategies such as interrupting, asking for clarification, and restarting discussions. This will be achieved through interpersonal communication activites in class. These activities will require students to talk to each other in English. English will be the primary language of communication between the teacher and the students in and out of class. Students will be expected to respect the classroom as an English only area.

/Course Goals
The course goal is for students to increase their ability to interact with their peers in an English environment. The goal is for successful interpersonal communication in terms of exchanging information, talking about personal beliefs and interests, talking about abstract topics such as the environment, career opportunities and education. One of the primary goals of the course is to develop communication strategies so that students can successfully negotiate meaning in situations where communication is not clear and direct. This involves restarting failed conversations, interruip0ting in a polite manner, rerestarting important information, and asking for clarification.

Students should prepare for lessons by reading the textbook unit that will be studied in each class. Students will be required to review the language structures, vocabulary, and strategies in order to pass the speaking tests.

成績評価の方法
/Grading
There will be 2 short presentations in class in weeks 6 and 11. These presentations will be related to the topics studied in the previous 5 weeks. There will also be a final project and presentation. This will be the most important assignment. There will also be sopeaking activities that involve a successful exchange of information in each class. Demonstrating an ongoing willingness to engage in these communication activities is crucial to receive a passing grade.

2 presentations: 2 x 20 = 40%
Final project: 20%
Final Presentation: 20%
Class participation: 20%

/Remarks
The ability to successfully communicate in English is a skill required by today’s successful career minded people. This course is intended to develop student’s ability to do so in a way that is fun, interesting, and enjoyable. Course content is both personal information regarding ideas and feeling about the world, and also current events, conflict areas, including natural and manmade disasters. Effort will be made to lower learner anxiety and make the learning environment supportive, encouraging, and positive.
