How to use Microforms materials

● What are microforms?

  • Microforms are copies printed on transparent or opaque material photographically or by other ways reduced as small as unreadable to the naked eye. They could record every form and content and could reduce the cost of storage and transport by reduction of information. Since they were cheaper than paper documents, microforms are introduced as typical ways of preservation of materials before information computerization in recent years.
  • Microform in OUC Library mainly consists of microfilm and microfiche. Microfilm is usually 35 mm roll film on which the reduced images of book, periodical, newspaper, drawing etc. are printed. Microfiche is usually 105 x 148 mm flat film on which the reduced images of each pages of the documents are printed (about the volume of 60 pages of a book of A4 size on a film).
  • You could check microforms in the Library on “List of microforms” and OPAC. Some materials are not inputted and others require the recognitive information such as company’s name or date, so it might take time to search and examine. Please ask the Library about details and any unclear points beforehand.
  • Our collection of microforms includes such as “Otaru Newspaper”, “Hokkaido Newspaper”, “Asahi Newspaper (Tokyo ed.)” from Meiji period to the beginning of Syowa period, “Securities report (from the 20th to the 30th of Syowa period)”, some of “materials about the old plantation”, “American Banker, 1980 - 94”, “GATT documents”.

● How to use microforms
  • Microforms are in the microforms area of the Legislative materials and Statistical materials room on 3rd floor of the Library and you could read and copy them with the special projector (the reader and printer of microfilms and microfiches). Users who would like to use microforms should check the existence of the materials you need on “List of microforms” and apply at the Main counter with an order form during the open hours. You could search on OPAC though some materials have not been registered yet.
  • There is only one projector in the Library. Also, you must change the parts depending on the form of the material. For your convenience, please check the form of the materials and register your visiting date and the title of the materials you need with Information Service Unit of the Library (at the Main counter) beforehand in the daytime of weekday.
