授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
A language is a social activity. In this course, we will focus on the social aspect of the human language, in order to better understand the social context of our language usage and thereby facilitate communication in English, Japanese, or any other language.
達成目標
/Course Goals
To become aware of the sociocultural background of our language usage and to better understand how linguistic communication functions in different social contexts.
授業内容
/Course contents
In each class, the instructor will first give a 30-minute lecture based on a handout. In the next 30 minutes, the students will be given a question related to the lecture. They will form a round table and consult various books related to the topic of the class provided by the instructor, with the provided question in mind. The students will then share with the class the knowledge they have gained from the books regarding the question. Lastly, the class will watch a short YouTube video related to the topic.

Students interested in further topics related to language and society are invited to ask questions during class, via e-mail, or at office hours to deepen their knowledge on the subject.
