授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
The canon of Japanese literature spans some 1400 years, deeply influenced by Chinese literature during the Ancient period and going on to develop its own unique aesthetic forms throughout the subsequent ages, characterized by a focus on sensitivity, awareness and nature. This is an introductory course focusing on Japanese literature in English translation, from the post-modern, modern, contemporary and early-modern periods. The objective of this course is to read and discuss famous works of Japanese literature in English translation and then to contrast and compare these works to the Japanese original. This will be a discussion-based class with an emphasis on extensive reading. Students will read excerpts from a varied collection of well-known works written by authors who exhibit different genres, styles and themes in their writing. The focus will then shift to a discussion of how these works relate to the periods when they were written and also how they are perceived today against the current cultural landscape.
