| 授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
This is a TOEFL preparation course for the internet-based TOEFL (iBT). TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is a widely recognized, standardized academic English proficiency test designed to measure listening, reading speaking, and writing skills of non-native speakers for university admissions, immigration, and professional certification. Many schools, colleges, universities, and private agencies administer the Institutional TOEFL (ITP). The Institutional TOEFL is used for admission, placement, eligibility, or employment only at the school or agency that offers the test. The objective of this course is to learn how to prepare for the TOEFL iBT and to improve TOEFL test scores. What is the purpose of the TOEFL (iBT)? Admissions officers at more than 10,000 colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, and 150 other countries worldwide require foreign applicants to submit TOEFL scores as well as transcripts and recommendations in order to be considered for admission. In addition, workers applying for visas in English-speaking countries often use TOEFL scores as part of their applications. The objective of this course is to improve students' ability to understand reading passages like those in college textbooks, to understand spoken English that is typical of interactions and academic speech on campuses, to communicate in English in an academic setting and to write essays in English similar to those you would write in college courses. |

| 達成目標 /Course Goals |
The TOEFL (iBT) is divided into 4 sections. The Reading Section tests your ability to understand reading passages like those in college textbooks. The Listening Section tests your ability to understand spoken English that is typical of interactions and academic speech on college campuses. The Speaking Section tests your ability to communicate in English in an academic setting. The Writing Section tests your ability to write essays in English similar to those you would write in college courses. The TOEFL (iBT) has converted section scores for each of the four sections. The range for each section score is 0-30. When the scores for the four sections are added together, the total score range is 0-120. The Reading section measures your ability to understand university-level academic texts. We will study the following three purposes for academic reading: reading to find information, basic comprehension and reading to learn. The Listening section measures your ability to understand spoken English in an academic setting. We will study the following three purposes for listening: listening for basic comprehension, listening for pragmatic understanding and connecting and synthesizing information. The speaking section measures your ability to speak effectively in academic and campus settings. We will study the following purposes for speaking: responding to questions, participating in academic discussions, summarizing information from textbooks and lectures, expressing views and opinions, participating in casual conversations and communicating on campus. The writing section measures your ability to write in English in an academic setting. The type of writing we will focus on is integrated writing. In this type of writing students must take notes and organize the information before writing, know how to summarize, paraphrase and make accurate references and be able to write how information they have heard relates to information they have read. By the end of this course students should achieve the following: 1. Students should be better able to understand reading passages like those in college textbooks. 2. Students should be better able to understand spoken English that is typical of interactions and academic speech on campuses. 3. Students should be better able to communicate in English in an academic setting. 4. Students should be better able to write essays in English similar to those you would write in college courses. |
