Etymology is the fascinating discipline of the origin of words. Did you know that the word salary comes from Latin salarium, derived from sal meaning ‘salt’, because Roman soldiers were paid allowance to buy salt? Or that the word dandelion comes from French dent de lion, meaning ‘lion tooth’? Learning English etymology is not only fun, but it can also help the learners of English to memorize new English words.

The student is invited to discover the origins of English words not discussed during the class through etymological dictionaries, including online dictionaries such as Etymonline or Wiktionary.

成績評価の方法
/Grading
For the last class, each student will be requested to give a five-minute chalk talk on the etymology of any English word. A chalk talk is a presentation using only a chalk and a blackboard (or a marker and a whiteboard) without any visual material, including Powerpoint slides or print handouts. The evaluation of the chalk talk will be based on how confidently the student presents to the audience and the clarity of the spoken English.

Absence for a justifiable reason will not be counted for the attendance grading.
