授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This is an intensive academic reading course. The main objective is for students to learn to read academic English naturally, without the need for translation.
Each unit in the textbook contains two chapters divided into two sections: reading comprehension and vocabulary comprehension and skills. In the reading comprehension section, students will learn reading skills, such as previewing, predicting, scanning, skimming for general ideas, making inferences, recognizing sequence of events, identifying main ideas, distinguishing between main ideas and supporting details, identifying and understanding cause and effect, recognizing facts, and noticing patterns. The objective of learning and mastering these reading strategies is to help students improve the way they approach an academic reading text, and through repeated practice, students should develop better comprehension skills and increase reading speeds.
In each chapter, there are two vocabulary skills sections:
Part A focuses on comprehension of vocabulary found in the reading passage. The objective is to reinforce understanding of meaning and nuance of key vocabulary related to the context of the reading text. This will help students to revise, recycle, and further cultivate a broader vocabulary lexicon.
Part B focuses on vocabulary skills and is designed to teach strategies that will help students improve their capacity to learn and comprehend new vocabulary items. These strategies include creating word webs, using synonyms, recognizing root words, using prefixes and suffixes, organizing vocabulary into topical contexts, analyzing adjective endings, using compound nouns, using adverbs, and understanding word families. In part B students practice key vocabulary items from part A in alternative contexts by completing cloze sentences, gap-fill activities, giving alternative examples and answering questions based on the target vocabulary.
