1. Course Descriptions and Objectives

This is the second half of the Business Economics series in the “glocal” education program at Otaru University of Commerce (OUC). The class accommodates both YOUC international students and OUC regular students who wish to learn concepts of business economics in English.

The main objective of this course is to provide you with some opportunities to learn the microeconomics of business enterprises and their competitive and organizational strategies based on the oligopoly theory. I will follow my own slides in class, but I will encourage your active participation by asking various questions.

You need to understand the basics of Business Economics I (BE1), such as monopoly pricing, price elasticity of demand, marginal revenue and marginal cost, etc. I will briefly and selectively review them in the first couple of classes. Therefore, you are at a good advantage over your classmates if you have previously been exposed to (and understood) such knowledge.

2. Course Goals

I want you (a) to become more familiar with microeconomic ways of thinking about business issues from the viewpoint of optimality/incentive and efficiency for individuals and firms given assumptions on the competitive environment and information among them, and (b) to apply such knowledge to some business and managerial cases. The second aspect distinguishes this class from most other economics courses. In particular, I will ask you to write a case report about an actual business (restaurant, souvenir shop, café, rotating sushi bar, etc.) of your strong interest based on the knowledge you will learn in the class.

7. Grading Criteria

I am not a sadist. All previous students who attended as many classes as possible and submitted as many assignments as possible could pass this course. However, you must work harder to get an “A” grade.

Here is some information about the grading criteria.

[1]: I will circulate the attendance sheet at the beginning of each session.

[2]: Regular homework will be T/F questions after each “Theory” session.

[3]: The midterm exam will be analytical and of a “take-home” style. TBD later.

[4]: The final report will be about an actual business of your vital interest. TBD later.

8. Course Style and Schedule

The class will be in-person: online only if the pandemic situation deteriorates unexpectedly. I have an email account for your quick communications with me:

ikedainotaru3@gmail.com

You should submit your homework assignments, questions, etc., to this account.

This course is on a quarterly basis, and we will have two sessions each Friday: one in the first session (8:50-10:20 ☹) and another in the third session (12:50-14:20). The course spans from June 16th to July 28th, with the last session spared for the review. I will assign you a take-home midterm exam sometime in the beginning of July (due in the middle of July) and the final case report in the middle of July (expected due in the middle of August).

9. Remarks

[A]
I will take a sabbatical (a one-year official break from school duties to pursue my research) from September 2023 until August 2024. To compensate for this absence, I will teach Business Economics I in the spring quarter, mainly for the freshman students this fiscal year. This is why Business Economics II (BE2) will be offered in the summer quarter (June-July 2023). BE2 is designed for those who have taken BE1 in previous years, but I welcome those who would have just completed BE1 in the spring quarter. In BE2, I will assume some basic knowledge (such as monopoly pricing, elasticity, etc.) to be covered in BE1 for your smooth learning in BE2. I will review them in BE2, but only briefly and selectively.

[B]
The outlook of the COVID-19 pandemic seems to be improving, but some people are still concerned about its re-surge. In order to protect your right to learn during a terrible situation, let me spare the option of teaching this course entirely online. Stay safe and healthy!
