授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course will investigate the syntax and semantics of quantifiers from cross-linguistic perspectives.
All natural languages have ways to represent quantification. However, it appears that the way of representations differs from language to language. For example, in Japanese, to represent the situation described in the English sentence (1), there are at least three ways, as shown in (2)-(4).

(1) All the cats ran away.

(2) Subete-no neko-ga nigedashita. [all-gen cat-nom ran.away]
(3) Neko subete-ga nigedashita. [cat all-nom ran.away]
(4) Neko-ga subete nigedashita. [cat-nom all ran.away]

How can we analyze the difference between Japanese and English? Can all the variants in Japanese in (2)-(4) be analyzed in a unified fashion? Are there any languages that show similar quantificational patterns to Japanese or English? Are there any languages that show different quantificational patterns from both Japanese and English? If any, how can we analyze such languages?

We will explore these questions not merely from descriptive points, but from theoretical aspects.
