授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
· To help you develop the academic writing skills that will enable you to write your academic thesis. During the course you will learn about the structure of an academic paper in order to understand the discourse features of each section.

*Your academic supervisor will guide your actual academic research – deciding your research topic and advising you on reading and your research project – this course is intended to support you in writing your dissertation.

/Course Goals
By the end of the course students will have learnt about the structure, grammar and discourse/style features of an academic essay. Specifically, they will have learned how to write the following sections: Introduction, Literature Review, Research Method, Data Presentation and Analysis, Discussion, Conclusion, References, Abstract.

Weekly Topics

1.  Introducing your field of specialisation and research interests. The genre of academic writing.
2.   Writing an introduction – Research aims & Thesis Statement. How to write an introduction.
3.   Paragraph Development – Topic Sentence, Cohesion, Transitions, Discourse Markers
4.   Research Project Starts
5.   Literature review 1- Summarizing, Paraphrasing
6.   Literature Review 2 - Quoting. Introducing, citing, and explaining quotations (ICE)
7.   Literature Review 3 – Complete Section
8.   Research Instrument (Qualitative v quantitative) Tools, Subjects, Context
9.   Methodology Section - How did you carry out your research?
10. Presenting the Data – Graphs, Tables, Figures, Labelling
11. Analysing the Data - Focusing on important points. Expressions and phrases. Tenses.
12. Conclusions – Addressing your Research Question
13. Improving Your Academic Style - Style, References, Appendices
14. Proofreading - Abstracts
15. Presentations about your research.

Final term papers to be submitted by August 8th.
事前学修・事後学修
/Preparation and
review lesson
· Each week in class the instructor presents a feature of academic writing from the course textbook.
· Students write an assignment based on the class discussion to be finished for homework.
· Weekly writing assignments are uploaded on Google Docs to be read and commented on by peers and the teacher during the class.
· All assignments will be marked and returned to each student by the following class.
· During the course, students carry out a research project, which forms the basis of an academic research paper. This is built up section by section on a weekly basis, culminating in a complete academic paper by the end of the course (2,500~3,000 words)

At the end of the course students will be graded based on the following:
• Weekly Homework:  60%
• Project Report:   40%

All writing assignments will be graded according to the following criteria:
• Grammatical and lexical accuracy and fluency.
• Adherence to appropriate academic style and formatting.
• Appropriate use of discourse and rhetoric.
• Appropriate use of citations and references.
• Addressing the writing topic in a full and relevant way.
履修上の注意事項
/Remarks
* The main language of instruction is English.
* Weekly attendance and participation is expected. Students should not miss more than 3 classes during the course.
