授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course will enhance students’ enjoyment of reading English, build their reading skills, and develop their vocabulary. The course will engage students with content-rich, high interest readings related to the academic content areas of tourism and hospitality, earth science, sports and fitness, and political science. Students will complete a variety of pre- and post-reading activities including writing. The lessons will be conducted real-time by Zoom or in-person lectures (subject to change in circumstances).

The objectives are:
(i) Develop fluency and confidence in reading and writing.
(ii) Develop strategies for reading comprehension
(iii) Increase vocabulary knowledge
(iv)  Gain knowledge of a wide range of academic areas


Course goals:
Students will practice reading comprehension, learn vocabulary, and develop reading and writing skills.
授業内容
/Course contents
Week 1: Orientation: Introduce the course structure, expectations and goals.
Week 2: Unit 1: What was life like in a medieval castle? Writing Skills: Brief introduction to academic writing styles and expectations.
Week 3: Unit 2: Why did the Inca empire disappear? Writing Assignment.
Week 4: Unit 3: How do Hindus celebrate the Diwali festival? Reading Skills: Understanding Vocabulary.
Week 5: Unit 4: What is the story behind the 1,001 Arabian Nights? Writing Skills: The use of adverbial conjunctions and transition words.
Week 6: Unit 5: What is Angkor Wat? Writing Assignment.
Week 7: Unit 6: What does hair tell us about people? Reading Skills: Scanning techniques. Instruction on finding the topic sentence in a paragraph. Instruction on identifying the main idea of a paragraph.

Week 8: Mid-term writing test: Choose a Writing Topic from the previous units. Preparation advice. Timed writing. 200-250 words
Week 9: Mid-term reading comprehension test. Selected Unit. Reading comprehension and vocabulary, use, and comprehension test.
Week 10: Unit 7: How did chopsticks originate? Reading Skills: Recognising the difference between facts and inference.
Week 11: Unit 8: Where did certain wedding customs come from?
Week 12: Unit 9: What is the curse of King Tut?
Week 13:  Unit 10: Why do people want to climb Mount Everest?
Week 14:  Unit 11: Why is the renaissance important? Writing Skills: How to formulate, plan and construct a short essay.
Week 15: End-of-term reading comprehension test. Selected Unit. Reading comprehension and vocabulary, use, and comprehension test.
Week 16:  End-of-term Writing test: Choose a Writing Topic from the previous units. Preparation advice. Timed writing. 300-400 words.

Students will be awarded: Excellent (90%+), A (80-89%), B (70-79%, C (60-69%), or D (0-59%).
