/Course Objectives and method
Discussion Strategies
This course will teach you how to participate and succeed in a discussion in English. Students will learn how to be sure you understand what’s being said to you. Be sure your ideas are understood. Each lesson will offer readings and questions which encourage your response. The lessons will show you how to use follow-up questions, ask for clarification, and use comprehension checks.

review lesson
The purpose of the practice is to gain experience using clarification and conformation strategies.  Therefore, reviewing of past lessons is advised but pre-viewing forthcoming lessons is not advised.

成績評価の方法
/Grading
The teacher will observe the student weekly and make notes in on-going assessment. In addition, the student will take a final exam based on course contents.  On-going: Students demonstrate an ability to participate in a discussion, ask for clarification, and use comprehension checks. This grade will be based on weekly pair-work observations. Additionally, students ability to read aloud and enunciate at the sentence level correctly.  60%

2) Final test; Students will be required to summarize a reading.  In addition students will demonstrate an ability to ask and answer a) factual and b) discussion questions; use the vocabulary of the course, and c) reflect in writing on the strategies they have learned. 40%

/Grading Criteria
100-90

Student’s English level is already at a usable intermediate level.  Student follows the guidelines of the course in oral and written work.  Students enunciation is good.  Students written work demonstrates an analysis of the text and its intended meaning. 


89-80

Student English level is a communicative level and this is noticeable in both oral and written communication.  The written work produced is less developed.  



79-70

Student reads most frequently used words smoothly but mispronounces less frequently used words.  Student demonstrates an understanding of the text and questions but also makes comprehension errors. 


69-60

Student participates when prompted but reads aloud without using appropriate intonation and mispronounces frequently used words.


59 (Fail)

Student fails to participate on appropriate attendance, and in class activities.
