英語科教育法IIを履修前にこの授業を履修すること。
The goal of this class is to introduce students to the field of teaching the English language in the Japanese school system. Although this class will focus on teaching English in the Japanese school system in most of the content, this class will also feature elements of knowledge that will help you to teach your native language as a foreign or second language. This is because the knowledge taught in this class will transfer easily to teaching other languages in many contexts. In general, this course in the first semester will cover topics in:
1. Foreign Language Learning Theories and Methodologies
2. Teaching in the Japanese school system:
   a. History of teaching English in Japan
   b. Overview of classes you will teach and 学習指導要領
   c. Class lessons
   d. Mock kadai*
*(by “kadai” I mean a short lesson of 10 to 20 minutes)
達成目標
/Course Goals
By the end of the class, you will be able to organize and teach one (possibly two) short lessons; will understand the different major methodologies of the Grammar-translation Method, Direct Method, the Audio-lingual Method, the Communicative Method, and Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT). You will  also understand the acquisition theories behind these methods and what advantages they have in your teaching future. These methods will be introduced with videos as well. This is something that is the basic knowledge of all language teachers.
In the Japanese context, you will understand how English has been taught since the Edo Period (i.e., the Hensoku Method) and how the influences outside the classroom have effected the teaching of English in Japan. You will also come to have a knowledge of what kind of classes you would be expected to teach at a regular school or a "Shingakko," based upon demands of the society as well as the Monkasho. You will also see many videos of actual classes in Japanese junior high and high schools.
