授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course is an English communication class. The focus will be on interpersonal communication. This involves 4 kinds of information exchange: 1. Successfully exchanging detailed information such as time, dates, scheduling information, and email addresses. 2. Exchanging personal information such as likes and dislikes, interests, family information, and personal history. 3. Exchanging ideas about abstract topics such as global warming, education, 4. Developing communication strategies such as interrupting, asking for clarification, and restarting discussions. This will be achieved through interpersonal communication activites in class. These activities will require students to talk to each other in English. English will be the primary language of communication between the teacher and the students in and out of class. Students will be expected to respect the classroom as an English only area.
達成目標
/Course Goals
The course goal is for students to increase their ability to interact with their peers in an English environment. The goal is for successful interpersonal communication in terms of exchanging information, talking about personal beliefs and interests, talking about abstract topics such as the environment, career opportunities and education. One of the primary goals of the course is to develop communication strategies so that students can successfully negotiate meaning in situations where communication is not clear and direct. This involves restarting failed conversations, interruip0ting in a polite manner, rerestarting important information, and asking for clarification.

1. Unit 1. Talk about people’s behavior and personality
2. Unit 2: Talk about your secret dreams
3. Unit 3: Talk about human wonders like buildings and structures
4. Speaking Test #1
5. Unit 4: Talk about gripes people have about family members and household rules
6. Unit 5: Describe your eating habits. Talk about healthy eating. Discuss different ways to cook and prepare food.
7. Unit 6: Talk about the future: plans, facts, predictions, and schedules
8. Speaking Test.#2
9. Unit 7: Talk about friendships. Discuss dating.
10. Unit 8: Talk about how you wish your life were different and why.
11. Unit 9: Discuss gadgets and technology. Ask for and offer help with technology problems
12. Speaking Test #3
13. Unit 10: Discuss your social life. Talk about different kinds of movies.
14. Unit 11: Speculate about people and situations. Talk about feelings and reactions.
15. Unit 12: Talk about events in the news. Talk about extreme weather and natural disasters.
16. Final Speaking Test.

/Preparation and review class
Students should prepare for lessons by reading the textbook unit that will be studied in each class. Students will be required to review the language structures, vocabulary, and strategies in order to pass the speaking tests.

成績評価の方法
/Grading
There will be 3 speaking tests in class in weeks 4, 8, and 12. These speaking tests will be based on what we have studied in the previous 3 weeks. They will involve successful exchange of information and also successful demonstration of communication strategies. There will also be a final speaking test. This will be the most important speaking test. There will also be review quizzes after each lesson to check student comprehension of vocabulary and grammar features.

/Grading Criteria
12 review quizzes: 2 x 12 = 24%
3 speaking tests: 3 x 15 = 45%
final speaking test: 20%
Class participation: 11%

/Remarks
The ability to successfully communicate in English is a skill required by today’s successful career minded people. This course is intended to develop student’s ability to do so in a way that is fun, interesting, and enjoyable. Effort will be made to lower learner anxiety and make the learning environment supportive and encouraging.
