授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
The aim of this course is to improve students’ speaking, listening, and composing
skills in English to help develop their confidence and ability in conducting day-to-day conversation, discussing various topics of interest, and speaking in front of the class. Points of emphasis include rules of social interaction, becoming a good listener, stress and intonation, connected speech, and pronunciation problems particular to Japanese.  Students will develop skill in participating in and leading a discussion.
     Course content will be based on a variety of learning activities that include interactive tasks such as roleplays, group discussions, presentations, singing songs as well as individual work such as listening comprehension and pronunciation practice. Details will be explained in the first class.

/Course Goals
・Students will develop fluency in the use of basic conversation questions and sentence patterns to talk about themselves and get information from others.
・Students will identify individual pronunciation problems and show improvement in approximating the sounds and making sound changes in connected speech.
・Students will develop vocabulary to be able to introduce and explain lifestyle and basic information of this university, city, and region of the country.
・Students will develop listening and speaking skills in order to actively participate in and lead a discussion.
・Students will develop skills in summarizing main points of a discussion and present them as a poster presentation.
授業内容
/Course contents
Week 1~2: Course introduction; textbook introduction; first discussion, brainstorming; group and self-assessment; make groups and choose first leader; leader report introduction
Week 3~4: Explore discussion dynamics; listening skill in discussion; finding commonalities with group; connected speech, song introduction, song choice
Week 5~6: Personal storytelling; brainstorming types; ways to support discussion; natural disaster victim support discussion; poster presentation of discussion result
Week 7~8: Exploring/clarifying positions; agreeing/disagreeing with positions; Hall of Fame discussion
Week9~10: Identifying/refining criteria for discussion; employment credential discussion
Week 11~12: Identifying/expressing solutions; examining assumptions/viewpoints; Menu discussion
Week:13: Introduce final group discussion; explore underlying cultural issues in decision making
Week 14: Discussion practice; course consolidation and review
Week 15: Final group discussion
事前学修・事後学修
/Preparation and review class
Students are required to prepare and review each lesson and write at least 2 group leader reports. Students are expected to seek out and listen to music to identify sound reductions in fast speech/singing throughout the course.

/Grading
50% participation and assignments; 50% final discussion
成績評価の基準
/Grading Criteria
Students must demonstrate improvement in their speaking ability and discussion skills to pass the course.
5 percentage points will be deducted from class participation score for each unexcused absence.
