授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course consists of classroom activities and on-line activities. The classroom is mainly for practice at speaking, listening, and communication. Preparation and review quizzes will be online and will be done outside the classroom. Students are encouraged to move from being passive learners to active participants. Individual work (e-learning) is aimed at improvement of each student's weak points, such as vocabulary, grammar and listening, as a preparation for actual classes, as well as making daily learning a habit in order to shift students towards being self-regulated learners.

/Course Goals
The major goal of this practical course is to build foundational English communication skills useful in the real world. Although the main focus is placed on oral communication, importance is also placed on vocabulary building, grammar, reading as well as listening comprehension. At the end of this course  students are to be able to:
1. Initiate and continue basic conversation in various daily settings.
2. Listen to conversations or explanation and understand the contents, as well as read the articles and understand the contents.
3. Acquire information, summarize, and exchange it with others.
4. Form simple ideas and opinions and express them in pairs and in small groups.

成績評価の方法
/Grading
The grading is based on many factors: weekly homework quizzes (takes about 10 minutes each week), in-class pair speaking tests (x2), on-line tests done during class time (x2 and they take about 30 minutes each), and in-class participation which includes discussions, language games, and puzzles.

preparation and review quizzes (online homework) 10%
mid-term on-line test: 15%
mid-term speaking test: 20%
final on-line test: 15%
final speaking test: 20%
