About the Library
 


      The Otaru University of Commerce (OUC) Library houses rich and diverse collections; about 450,000 books (as of 2009) and over 11,000 titles of periodicals mainly in the field of social science, which are being added continuously. Among others, OUC Library Special collections contain many books on economics, social thought and law. The collection comprises the private libraries donated by professors in the early times of OUC such as Inosuke Onishi (1923), Gustave Schelle (1924), Juzo Tezuka (1944), Miyoji Hayakawa (1970) Nizaburo Kito (1949). Our Rare book collections of economic and historical materials are on view in the Exhibition Room. They include the first edition of valuable works such as: Karl Marx’s Das Kapital (1867), Adam Smith’s An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776), and Thomas R. Malthus’s An Essay on the Principle of Population (1798).
